After the first day usual difficulties (it is always difficult to get used to new food and get accomodated in a new house with a new family), everything is getting on very well. Today was the welcome day and the kick-off of our project. Our kids had a wonderful time!.
Yesterday our Canadian students got to present our cultural project on St. James’ Way (O Camiño), the well-known pilgrimage route. We invited the whole educational community to come in and we turned the school into a museum, with a two-part exhibition: one in the library and another one around the school, a museum pilgrimage-effect circuit. First, we all met in the school library. There, by using a powerpoint presentation, the students took it in turns to talk about every single thing they found out about the topics we suggested for research: the city of Santiago, history, the different ways, gastronomy, monuments, music, Jacobean associations around the world… Our principal, Irene Washylk, organised a wonderful coffee and cookie treat. Then, attendees went onto a 10-stop pilgrimage-effect circuit around the school where 10 different groups (already divided as such for research) explained to them everything about each topic. Magdalena Tundak, the district consultant, joined us and loved our students’ work. We told her how well the bilingual programme is working at St Hilda Junior High and how much we think it should be extended and endowed with more resources. Elder Mendez, the teacher in charge of the biligual programme, did a wonderful job guiding the students throughout the process as well as making ideas happen. I would like to thank him for his welcoming support during my stay and congratulate him on his wonderful work with the kids. I would also like to thank the whole teaching staff for making me feel at home, especially: Nicole Turko, my hostess; Nella Funaro, the principal assistant who understood every need I have had; Sara Mudryk, my BQ; and George Gibney, my new grandad. Friends forever! Continue Reading
