Uncle Cáscoles’ House, now an Ecomuseum, shows us the building techniques and the different materials. It gives visitors an idea of the typical lifestyle in this town (Romangordo) and these houses. The Museum of the Route of the English chronicles the battle of the bridge of New Place, which took place during the Peninsular War.
Continue Reading

Yesterday evening our students from IES Xulián Magariños presented their projects (designed, made and worked upon before coming to the camp thanks to the help of their teachers Chus Escurís and Luisa Nieto as well as their language assistant, Sam Bell) to the rest of the students and to all the teachers in the programme. They did a wonderful job in English! We organised a contest in which the audience voted for the best project and the best presentation. The kids from both Almería and Galicia decided that the best project was José Caamaño’s, but we were really proud of how well all our Galician kids did.
Kids are having fun! Yesterday night, right after having their daily meeting with Kety and me, they were divided in groups and had to do a treasure hunt around the town. It was great! (a bit scary though). Today in the morning, right after breakfast, all of us had to do an evacuation drill, together with the town Mayoress, Rosario Cordero and some official authorities. The drill is related to the Cáceres Nuclear Emergency Plan, which aims at practising the intervention of national and international support teams, in the case of an emergency at the Almaraz nuclear power plant that affects the plant surrounding countryside. The exercise was coordinated by the General Directorate of Civil Protection and Emergencies of the Spanish Ministry of the Interior, in cooperation with the Central Government Representative’s Office in Cáceres and the European Commission. Yesterday, after a whole day full of workshops, games, museums…the students talked to us about their impressions on the day programme and, right away, they had a class on American Indians with us, the teachers. Kety and I introduced the subject and related it to how tribes respected nature in every single aspect of their lives. Kety did a wonderful job in our CLIL-related class and I am really positive that she will join me and Clara Cristela in our bilingual programme in the IES Xulián Magariños next year. The students worked in groups and gave themselves the name of a tribe (Navajo, Inuit…) as well as a particular name that they themselves made up: flying eagles, tired donkeys, funny pigs, crazy cows and red faces. They watched two videos about Indian life with topics ranging from clothes and food to weapons and house-building. They had to take down some notes and make a decision about who would represent the group for communication of ideas about the topics presented. We were amazed by how the students got to communicate their opinions on the topics proposed. Continue Reading

Saying goodbye does not have to be a sad thing. Have a look at my farewell pics and you will realise how funny it can be to leave (although you do not want to). The fact is that I am taking wonderful things with me: incredibly professional teachers who have become friends, amazingly nice students, enriching experiences and, above all, a lot of positive feelings. I am going to MISS you, because you are in my heart and gonna be there forever.
Continue Reading
